What Are Asphalt Millings?

If you need a durable, all-weather driveway surface without the cost of fresh asphalt, asphalt millings — also called Recycled Asphalt Pavement or RAP — are worth serious consideration. At $20 per ton, they deliver a surface that starts as a firm compactable gravel and progressively hardens into something that looks and feels very close to a paved road, at a fraction of the price.

Millings are produced when old paved roads, parking lots, and highways are resurfaced. A large machine called a cold-planer grinds the existing pavement to a specified depth. The resulting material is a blend of the original crushed aggregate and the aged asphalt binder that held it together, now broken into particles typically ¾ inch and smaller.

Once you compact millings into a driveway, Colorado's summer sun warms the surface, the residual binder softens slightly, vehicle traffic consolidates the particles, and over the course of one season the driveway firms up into a cohesive, stable surface. It won't wash out in rain, won't dust like gravel, won't rut under normal vehicle loads, and gives your property a clean, dark, finished appearance year after year.

Where Are Asphalt Millings Used?

Millings perform best in applications where a firm, durable surface is needed and the economics of fresh asphalt don't make sense.

• Residential Driveways & Long Ranch Lanes — The most common application. Millings compact into a firm, dark surface that handles daily traffic and holds its shape through Colorado's wet springs and cold winters far better than loose gravel.
• Private Roads & Access Roads — For HOA roads, ranch access, and private road networks where ongoing maintenance and dust are ongoing problems, millings offer a near-paved alternative at a fraction of the construction cost.
• Parking Areas — Commercial and residential parking lots where full asphalt isn't cost-justified benefit significantly from millings.
• RV Pads & Equipment Staging — A firm, drained surface for RV parking or construction equipment staging that won't sink or track mud onto adjacent paved surfaces.
• Base Layer Under New Asphalt — Compacted millings make an excellent sub-base layer beneath a thin fresh asphalt overlay, providing structural support and reducing the thickness of new paving required.
• Pothole Patching & Road Maintenance — Millings can be used for temporary or semi-permanent patching of potholes and road surface failures, particularly on private roads where CDOT materials aren't required.

Installation & Practical Guidance

At a compacted depth of 4 inches — the recommended minimum for a residential driveway with regular passenger vehicle traffic — one ton covers approximately 80–90 square feet. For a 12' wide, 200' long driveway (2,400 sq ft), plan for 27–30 tons at 4-inch depth. Bump to 6 inches for driveways that will see heavy trucks, RVs, or frequent delivery vehicles. Add 10% for waste and settling.

Subgrade preparation is the single most important factor in a millings project. Clear all vegetation, roots, and topsoil. Grade and compact the native subgrade. On soft, clay-heavy Colorado soils, consider laying a geotextile separation fabric over the subgrade before placing millings.

• Compaction is required — Millings must be mechanically compacted — hand-tamping is not sufficient. A vibratory plate compactor works for smaller areas; a smooth drum roller is the professional tool for driveways and roads. Place millings in lifts no greater than 3–4 inches.
• Edge containment is critical — Install edging (steel landscape edging, concrete curbing, or timber borders) along all edges before the first summer to contain the material while the binder bonds. Edges without containment will crumble and migrate outward.
