Asphalt Millings — Residential Driveway Surface, Teller County CO
If you need a durable, all-weather driveway surface without the cost of fresh asphalt, asphalt millings — also called Recycled Asphalt Pavement or RAP — are worth serious consideration. At $20 per ton, they deliver a surface that starts as a firm compactable gravel and progressively hardens into something that looks and feels very close to a paved road, at a fraction of the price.
Millings are produced when old paved roads, parking lots, and highways are resurfaced. A large machine called a cold-planer grinds the existing pavement to a specified depth. The resulting material is a blend of the original crushed aggregate and the aged asphalt binder that held it together, now broken into particles typically ¾ inch and smaller.
Once you compact millings into a driveway, Colorado's summer sun warms the surface, the residual binder softens slightly, vehicle traffic consolidates the particles, and over the course of one season the driveway firms up into a cohesive, stable surface. It won't wash out in rain, won't dust like gravel, won't rut under normal vehicle loads, and gives your property a clean, dark, finished appearance year after year.
Millings perform best in applications where a firm, durable surface is needed and the economics of fresh asphalt don't make sense.

Summer Softening — A Normal Characteristic
Freshly placed millings and even well-aged millings surfaces can soften during the hottest summer hours, particularly in areas of concentrated static load (parked vehicles with narrow tires, kickstands, heavy equipment). This is normal behavior for any bituminous material and is not a product defect. Avoid parking in the same spot repeatedly during peak summer heat while the surface is curing.
