What Is MCG Fill Dirt?
Fill dirt is the most economical way to move grade — raising low spots, filling excavations, building berms, and establishing site elevation before finish materials go on top. At $14 per ton, MCG's fill dirt is pit-run material sourced directly from our Divide, Colorado pit and is priced for projects where volume matters more than purity.
Important — Material Disclosure
MCG's fill dirt is not clean fill. It is pit-run material and may contain a variety of debris including: rocks and gravel, concrete chunks, concrete with embedded rebar, roots and woody organics, and general non-hazardous pit debris. This material is appropriate for non-structural bulk fill applications where debris content does not affect performance. It is NOT appropriate for structural foundations, engineered fill applications, septic system backfill, or any application where your engineer specifies clean, tested fill.
Where Fill Dirt Works Well
Despite its 'not clean' nature, MCG fill dirt is perfectly suited to a wide range of common site preparation tasks where bulk volume and economy are the priority.
- Raising Low Spots & Drainage Correction — Fill low areas that collect standing water, establishing positive grade that drains away from structures.
- Backfilling Large Excavations — Filling utility trenches (below the top 12 inches), post-hole excavations, and construction voids where engineered fill is not specified.
- Building Berms & Grade Changes — Creating landscape berms for privacy screening, noise reduction, or aesthetic grade change across a property.
- Sub-base Elevation Under Class 6 — A common pairing: fill dirt establishes rough site elevation economically, then a layer of Class 6 Road Base creates the final drivable or buildable surface above it.
- Construction Staging & Site Leveling — Contractors use fill dirt to create level work platforms and equipment staging areas on uneven terrain during construction.
Pro Tip — Fill & Cap Strategy
For driveway and parking area projects, MCG fill dirt is a cost-effective way to bring a low site up to rough grade before capping with 6 inches of compacted Class 6 Road Base. Using fill dirt for the bulk of the elevation change and Class 6 only for the top layer can substantially reduce the overall material cost of larger projects.
Delivery & Quantity
Fill dirt is typically delivered in larger quantities — the economics work best at multi-load scale. Our Tandem Dump Truck (14–16 tons per load) is well suited for residential fill work and navigates the access roads common to Teller and Park County properties. For larger commercial grading projects requiring significant volume quickly, the End Dump (20–25 tons per load) reduces the number of trips and gets your site to grade faster.
Because debris content varies by load, we recommend not using MCG fill dirt in the top 12 inches of any surface that will receive foot traffic, machinery, or a finish layer of aggregate. Cap it, compact it, and build on top of it — that's the right application for this material.
