When volume, payload, and speed of unloading are the priorities — boulders, bulk aggregate, large commercial projects — the End Dump Truck is the right tool. Unlike the tandem dump, which is a straight truck, the End Dump is a semi-trailer configuration: a tractor unit pulls a dedicated dump trailer that raises from the rear using a powerful hydraulic hoist. The result is the highest single-load payload in the MCG fleet at 20–25 tons per load and a discharge speed that is dramatically faster than any straight truck.

The name describes the mechanism precisely: material exits from the end (rear) of the raised trailer, through a high-lift tailgate that swings upward to release the load cleanly. The hydraulic system lifts the bed to a steep angle — sometimes exceeding 45 to 50 degrees — allowing even heavy, angular material like boulders and 4 Inch Minus Rock to flow freely without sticking. On a per-ton basis, the End Dump is MCG's most economical delivery option for large loads, because each trip carries significantly more material than a tandem run.

Site Spotter — A Smart Addition for Large Loads

For End Dump deliveries — especially boulders and large aggregate volumes — having a spotter on the ground is strongly recommended. This is a person who stands at a safe distance with a clear view of the dump zone and communicates with the driver using hand signals or radio during the unload. The spotter watches where material is going, signals the driver to pause if anything is rolling unexpectedly, and guides repositioning between staged dumps.

The driver backs the trailer to the target position, chocks the wheels if required, unlocks and raises the tailgate, then elevates the bed hydraulically until the entire load slides free. The high-lift tailgate swings upward on pneumatic or hydraulic rams, opening the full rear aperture for fast, unobstructed discharge. Best for bulk rock, boulders, and any load where a concentrated pile at a precise point is the goal. Fastest unloading cycle of any delivery method.

Multi-Point · Long Sites · Spread CoverageStaged Partial Dump

The driver raises the bed to release a portion of the load, then lowers the bed, repositions the trailer, and repeats — distributing the load across multiple points in a single delivery run. Requires a site with enough maneuvering room to reposition between dumps. Effective for spreading material along a long driveway in multiple piles, or delivering to several points around a large retaining wall project. The driver coordinates each placement position with you between stages.

Road Base · Long Runs · Straight AccessWalking (Creep) Dump

On sites with adequate straight-line access, the driver raises the bed partially and drives the tractor slowly forward while material discharges, spreading it in a progressive windrow along the site. Less common for the End Dump than for the Belly Dump — but useful when spreading bulk Class 6 or 4 Inch Minus across a long access road or large staging area where multiple stationary dumps would leave too many gaps. Requires flat, firm, straight access with no turning.

Boulders · Precision PlacementControlled Gravity Release

For boulder deliveries, the driver raises the bed incrementally — a few degrees at a time — while monitoring how individual stones are shifting and beginning to move. By controlling the lift rate and pausing between increments, an experienced driver can influence which boulders release first and where they land relative to your containment setup. Not a guarantee of individual boulder placement, but a significant improvement over a single fast dump. Discuss your site preparation (railroad ties, barriers) with the driver on arrival.

Experience You Can Hear in the Cab

Operating an End Dump semi requires a higher level of skill and site awareness than any straight truck. The longer wheelbase, the weight distribution dynamics of a loaded trailer, and the stability considerations during bed elevation demand a driver who has done this hundreds of times — on Colorado mountain terrain, in variable ground conditions, with real stakes on the line.

MCG's End Dump drivers hold a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) — the highest CDL classification, required to operate a tractor-trailer combination vehicle. They carry appropriate commercial insurance, comply fully with FMCSA and CDOT regulations, and perform mandatory pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections per 49 CFR § 396.13 on every operating day.

Beyond credentials, MCG drivers bring field-earned instinct. Before backing into any dump position, our driver will read the site: ground firmness, surface slope, overhead clearances, backing angle, and proximity of people and equipment. They will discuss your delivery plan with you face to face and flag any site condition that needs to be addressed before the bed goes up.

Site Requirements — What the End Dump Needs to Operate Safely

  • Level, stable ground is non-negotiableWhen the bed is raised, the trailer's center of gravity shifts dramatically upward. A lateral slope as small as 3–5 degrees combined with uneven material flow can initiate a rollover. MCG drivers will not raise the bed on soft, sloped, or unstable ground — ever.
  • Vertical clearance up to 28–30 feetA fully raised End Dump bed on a long trailer extends up to 30 feet into the air. Power lines, tree branches, and overhead structures must be assessed and cleared before delivery.
  • Straight jackknife-free alignmentThe tractor and trailer must be aligned as straight as possible before the bed is raised. A sharply angled tractor-trailer configuration dramatically reduces stability during dumping and is a leading cause of End Dump rollovers.
  • Turning radius & access lengthA tractor-trailer requires significantly more room to maneuver than a straight truck — typically 80–90 feet of overall length and a wide backing arc. Share your site layout with Tess when booking.
  • Boulder delivery containmentFor boulder loads, the customer must have railroad ties, timber barriers, a compacted berm, or other robust backstop in place at the dump zone before the truck arrives. Boulders are heavy and they roll.

Rollover Risk — Why Level Ground Is Non-Negotiable

End Dump trailer rollovers are the most serious safety hazard in aggregate hauling — and they happen when drivers skip ground assessment, rush the setup, or allow delivery on slopes. MCG drivers are trained and authorized to refuse a dump if site conditions are unsafe. If a driver says the ground is not suitable for raising the bed, listen to them.
