MCG's Tandem Dump Truck is the most versatile delivery vehicle in our fleet and the go-to choice for the majority of residential and contractor projects across Teller, Park, Fremont, Jefferson, Douglas, El Paso, and Pueblo County. The name refers to its axle configuration — two rear drive axles that provide weight distribution, stability, and traction that a single-axle truck simply cannot match on Colorado's steep, rutted, and sometimes soft mountain terrain.

With a payload capacity of 14–16 tons per load and a shorter wheelbase than full semi-trailer configurations, the tandem is uniquely suited to the access realities of Colorado mountain properties: narrow gates, steep grade changes, winding driveways, and tight turnaround areas where a larger truck would get stuck or cause site damage. It is powerful enough to haul a full load of Class 6 Road Base, boulders, or 4 Inch Minus Rock, and maneuverable enough to back into spots that most trucks will not attempt.

Any licensed trucking company can put a tandem dump on the road. What consistently separates MCG from competitors — and what our customers tell us about, unprompted, after nearly every delivery — is the driver.

MCG drivers hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), carry appropriate insurance, and meet all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements. The truck is federally registered, carries a DOT number, passes regular safety inspections, and operates within Colorado's legal axle weight and bridge law limits. That's the baseline — every compliant operator meets it.

Before a single yard of material moves, our driver will walk your site with you, discuss where and how you want the material placed, assess the approach angle and surface conditions, and talk through the best delivery method for your specific situation. They ask questions. They listen. They adapt the delivery to your project — not the other way around.

Equipment, Compliance & Site Capability

• CDL Driver — All MCG drivers hold a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License as required by FMCSA 49 CFR Part 383. No exceptions.
• DOT Registration — MCG's trucks operate under a USDOT number and comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR). The truck and driver records are subject to FMCSA audit at any time.
• Colorado Bridge Law Compliance — Colorado Revised Statutes § 42-4-503 limits axle group weights on public roads. MCG loads its tandem within legal axle weight limits so your delivery proceeds without permit delays or citations.
• Insurance — The truck carries commercial auto liability and cargo insurance meeting or exceeding Colorado minimum requirements. Certificates available on request for contractor and permit submittals.
• Vehicle Maintenance — Trucks are maintained on a scheduled DOT inspection cycle. Pre-trip and post-trip driver inspections are completed on every operating day per 49 CFR § 396.13.
• GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) — A loaded tandem typically operates at 60,000–80,000 lbs GVW depending on payload. Customers with private bridges, septic fields near the driveway, or soft subgrade should discuss site conditions with Tess before scheduling.

Site Capability & Honest Limitations

• Tight access — better than a semi — The tandem's shorter wheelbase (typically 200–220 inches bumper to rear axle) gives it a tighter turning radius than an end dump semi. It can navigate most residential driveways, ranch entrances, and mountain access roads that full trailer combinations cannot reach.
• Steep grades — built for Colorado — Two rear drive axles provide the traction needed on gravel and dirt grades common across Teller and Park County. The driver will assess grade and surface conditions on arrival and determine the safest approach direction.
• Soft or wet subgrade — A loaded tandem at 70,000+ lbs can cause rutting or surface damage on very soft or saturated ground. If your site has wet conditions, mention it when you call. We can advise on timing or access routes to minimize surface impact.
• Overhead clearance — The truck height with bed down is approximately 11–12 feet. Low-hanging tree branches, utility lines, or porch overhangs along the access path need to be assessed before arrival.
• Very tight turnarounds — Some mountain property lots have turnaround areas too small for a tandem to complete a three-point turn while loaded. If backing in and driving out forward is not possible, discuss the site layout with Tess in advance.

What to Expect on Delivery Day

• Confirm the morning of — Tess or the driver will contact you to confirm the delivery window. MCG values your time — we communicate schedule changes promptly so you are never left waiting and wondering.
• Driver walks the site with you — On arrival, the driver will discuss the placement plan with you before backing in. This is your opportunity to show exactly where you want the material, ask about delivery methods, and flag any site conditions the driver should know about.
• Precise placement — MCG drivers take pride in placing material exactly where you want it — not approximately, not "close enough." If the first spot dump isn't where you wanted it, speak up. Our drivers expect and welcome real-time feedback during delivery.
• Clean exit — After the load is down and the bed is returned to travel position, the driver will confirm you are satisfied with the placement before leaving the site. Any issues are resolved on the spot, not after the truck is gone.
